An alternative to induction loops?

Why radar is the future of vehicle detection

For years, induction loops have been the standard in vehicle detection. They operate by generating a magnetic field, which is disrupted when a metal vehicle passes over it. This disruption triggers a signal – for instance, to open an automatic barrier.

But... times are changing. Increasingly, vehicles are made from aluminium or carbon fibre – materials that are less easily detected by induction loops. Trailers also present a challenge: loops often only detect the wheels, rendering the rest of the vehicle “invisible”. The danger? A barrier closing too soon. To avoid this, additional photocells are sometimes required, adding complexity and increasing installation costs.

At Vacal, we set out to find a reliable alternative. And we found it: the AX radar.

Why choose radar instead of induction loops
  • Detects all vehicles, regardless of material
  • Precisely adjustable detection field, tailored to your situation
  • Presence-based detection, not just metal
  • Quick and easy on-site configuration

In summary, radar offers greater reliability, greater flexibility, and greater safety.

That’s why Vacal now recommends radar for most projects. We still install loops, but only on specific request.
